Blind taste White Burgundies, including Grand and Premier Cru wines, against a dozen top NZ Chardonnays at the Great Chardonnay Renaissance, a unique event to celebrate the 10th anniversary of New Zealand’s The Family of Twelve (FXII). The tasting will be held at exclusive members’ club The Stables Sydney where Gourmet Traveller WINE contributor, Nick Stock will be joined by the Family’s three Masters of Wine, Michael Brajkovich, Steve Smith and Alastair Maling, to lead guests through the tasting while the Stables Sydney’s sommelier Sarah Limacher and her team will pour the wines.

The Family of Twelve is a group of NZ’s most enduring and artisanal wineries. Founded in 2005, the Family’s vision is to nurture the production and promotion of NZ wine. “New Zealand wine today has found itself on the world’s stage and that’s where we want it to be. But we want it to be there by design not accident; to be there because it’s good, very good” explains FXII chairman, William Hoare. “If we’re going to play on the world stage, we need to measure ourselves against the world’s best from time to time” says former FXII chairman, Richard Riddiford. New Zealand’s diverse regions are well suited to the production of characterful Chardonnay of finesse and longevity. The tasting will reflect a wide viticultural spectrum comprising Auckland, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Nelson, Martinborough, Marlborough, Canterbury and Central Otago – all home to Family wineries.

After the inaugural Great Chardonnay Renaissance tasting held in Auckland, Hoare remarked, “one of the most interesting things was the discussion among the crowd as they tried to identify which wines were the Burgundies”.

Steve Smith MW predicts “The next decade will be New Zealand’s greatest in winegrowing”.
