Think Kumeu River and you think exceptional Chardonnay. Winemaker Michael Brajkovich MW always says, “We didn’t choose Chardonnay, Chardonnay chose us.”
The Brajkovichs at Kumeu River have gone from being among the founder generation of the modern wine industry in New Zealand to internationally acclaimed Chardonnay experts. The winery was founded in 1944 by Maté Brajkovich and his parents, who brought their wine making know-how from Croatia to Auckland. Maté’s wife, Melba and their four children continue to build on his passion, focus and reputation.
Kumeu River is globally recognised as a benchmark for non-Burgundy produced Chardonnay. Back in 1985, Michael produced a Chardonnay in the Burgundian style. The wine judges hated it. The people who drink wine for its enjoyment loved it. This wine, and the vintages that followed, were Kumeu River’s first internationally recognised wine and quickly became its signature. It has gone on to be likened to a grand cru.www.kumeuriver.co.nz
