Maté Brajkovich and his parents established Kumeu River Wines when they bought property in Kumeu in 1944. When Maté passed away in 1992 the leadership of the company was taken over by his wife Melba. The winery and vineyards are still family owned and operated by Maté’s widow Melba and their four children Michael, Marijana, Milan and Paul.
Michael, after graduating from Roseworthy College in South Australia, became Kumeu River’s winemaker in 1982. He also achieved the distinction of being New Zealand’s first Master of Wine in 1989. Milan looks after viticulture, Paul is the Marketing Manager and Marijana recently joined to work on financial and marketing projects.
The wines of Kumeu River have gained a strong foothold within the international market. The winery’s Chardonnays have received outstanding accolades and are considered world class by a number of international wine commentators.
