Pegasus Bay was established in the mid 80’s by the Donaldson family, who were pioneers of the Canterbury wine industry. Professor Ivan Donaldson oversees wine styles and viticulture, while his wife Christine focuses her energies on the extensive winery garden. Three of their four sons work for the family business; Matthew who is in charge of winemaking, Paul the General Manager, Edward the Marketing Manager and his wife Belinda oversee the winery restaurant that was awarded New Zealand’s best winery restaurant for five consecutive years.
The vineyard is now almost 30 years old and is approximately 40 hectares. The winery’s main focus is Riesling and Pinot Noir making five styles of each. The Pegasus Bay wines are made from estate grown fruit. Pegasus Bay has been rated as one of New Zealand’s top five producers by influential US wine critic Robert Parker and named Canterbury’s top producer of fine wine by well-known New Zealand wine writer Michael Cooper.
